Good intentions mean nothing if not backed by action. Everytime I hear of an accident where onlookers did nothing, I get mad and say "I'd never do that." Even I feel sick of the atrocities perpetrated against women by hooligans and I have commented upon this in many of my blogs.
This morning, I saw a girl walking down a few yards from CST Station, Mumbai onwards perhaps to her office. An young man was following her. I was right behind both. As the young girl entered into a relatively sparsely crowded lane, the young man lifted his hand from nowhere and placed it around her hip and groped her. The young girl just stood still and looked stunned, as she could not believe anyone can do it to her like that in broad daylight. I was as much surprised and did not react at all. Luckily, in no time, three guys rushed from behind me and caught hold of that lecherous guy and beat him black and blue. The girl wore a very desolate look and cautiously proceeded ahead to her office.
I could have grabbed the man and slapped him, but I didn't. I later thought of it as an one-off incident and would not happen again. But deep in my mind, I knew such an incident can occur again. The young girl continues to haunt me. I feel no better than all those people I accuse of being insensitive.

I have lived in large city's and have seen some horrible things and I too must admit
I have stood immobile. I too have some faces that haunt me. Now that I am a parent
I hope and pray that if I ever am put into a situation where it is my child my primative instincts
will guide me.
Many Blessing

Dear Sureshmiyer,
Not everyone is trained or mentally prepared to react to these situations. It takes an entire change of attitude towards people and how you see them, the change is pretty much permanent. Take it from someone who knows. Action is fine but to continually speak out and change the attitudes of many is also extremely important. Some of us have to trained, for years, to react immediately without thinking and therefore have to face the consequences of our actions. I might make an immediate change by my actions but you can make a more permanent change by affecting many more than the occasional one or two that I have to deal with. Just my thoughts on your blog.
Best wishes, Viv
